1) One of the first things you need to do is get a NIF number. If you are buying, renting or opening a bank account, this number is mandatory. The local number to Financas is +351-217-206-707 (an English option is not available at this time). The following link is a very thorough explanation of the NIF number and all of its many facets. I couldn’t have written it better myself. Thank you @govisafree.

2) The second most important thing to do is get a Portuguese bank account (See number 1). The number of options are unlimited and people have a lot of opinions about each company. Do your homework, ask people already living here and decide. You will need a minimum of 20% of the expected value of your home purchase in available funds here in Portugal to start with. If renting, have at least six months of your expected rent costs available. Many landlords will ask for Bank statements, so bear that in mind when deciding how much money to transfer to this account.
3) Automobiles. The cost of cars here is more expensive than a lot of European countries. Whether or not you decide on a new or used cars, do your research. Some find it more cost effective to bring one from home or even buy one from *Germany* (for example). The gas costs here are also higher than in most European countries.
4) Furniture. Yes, we have IKEA here and it is a great way to buy the basics for your new home. After Covid, we have experienced the same shortages as many places around the world. Wood, Steel, etc.. Even if you find the perfect Sofa, you might end up waiting for it for a very, very, very long time.
